Taken 3 Looks To Take The Money: Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

Taken3 PosterIt’s the early days of the year and that means we’re well into awards season. Films that believe they’ll be getting some kind of honour are expanding into more theatres after a limited run while other, well regarded films, are coming back for second engagements.

Still others seem to have always been there critical darlings waiting for you to see them after reading a “Best of” column on the web over the holidays.

But that doesn’t mean action and suspense won’t rule at the box office. Follow me after the jump for this weekend’s box office predictions!

Who doesn’t love Liam Neeson? And who doesn’t believe that he can kick ass? In his career, that guy has fought off organized crime, feudal knights, Nazis, the Brits, ghosts, Sith Lords, a pack of wolves, Daniel Day-Lewis and Batman himself!

Holee molee.

There’s a good argument that Liam Neeson may be the toughest guy ever!

In any case, Taken 3, obviously the third film in the multi-million dollar franchise that keeps punching above its weight class, makes its release this weekend. Look for it to dominate at the box office, both domestically and internationally – a market that did very well for the second film a few years ago.

Selma is also widely released this weekend. The film about Dr. Martin Luthor King and equal voting rights in the southern United States of America is on various award lists. It might not make the coin that Taken 3 does this weekend, but I’d expect word of mouth and a continued positive critical reception to give this film long legs. Directed by Ava DuVernay, there’s lots of star power in this film (David Oyelowo, Tom Wilkinson, Tim Roth, Oprah Winfrey, Cuba Gooding Jr.) and it covers a fascinating and important time in American history – which should resonate appropriately for the days in which we live.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice also expands in theatres, but not enough to allow it to crack the Top 5, while The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies should start to see a slip. Everyone that was going to see this film has now seen it.

Here, then, are the predictions:

1) Taken 3 – $33 million

2) Selma – $14 million

3) The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies – $11 million

4) Into the Woods – $9 million

5) Unbroken – $8 million

Be back with us on Sunday for a review of the predictions. Let’s see if Taken 3 does indeed take the box office. My money’s on Liam Neeson!
